What are the benefits of Zinc for the skin?
Zinc (Zn) is one of the most abundant trace elements in the human body. Necessary in over 200 chemical reactions, Zinc is notably involved in protein synthesis. This trace element with antioxidant virtues acts on growth, respiration, the endocrine system, immunity, inflammation, reproduction... and is an essential ally for the skin.
This trace element, essential to the proper functioning of skin cells, is present in many of our skin care products. Here's an overview of its origin and virtues...
WHAT IS ZINC?
Scientific studies on this trace element are fairly recent, and it was long thought to be of no importance to health. It would appear that the first studies carried out on animals date back to the 1920s, followed by more advanced studies enabling it to be isolated and synthesized in 1960.
Found in bones, skin, liver, muscles and even hair, Zinc is a basic trace element in our bodies. Zinc's role in our organism is manifold: it supports the functioning of the immune system, promotes the transport of vitamins A and E, stimulates the production of melanin, plays a role in the integration of fatty acids, participates in DNA synthesis... In short, it's an overworked worker!
Sources of this trace element are numerous in the diet. It is found in oysters, red and white meats, wholemeal bread, egg yolks, fish, lentils, seeds, nuts and cereals...
Recommended daily intakes are around 11 mg for men and 8 mg for women. A varied, well-balanced diet is sufficient to meet these recommendations.
HOW DOES ZINC AFFECT THE SKIN?
Zinc is involved in protein synthesis, including collagen and elastin, which give skin its firmness and elasticity. It is also involved in cell regeneration. This trace element is also a real ally for combination and oily skin. It allows the skin to "breathe" by regulating sebum production, thus avoiding clogged pores. You can discover all the regulating virtues of Zinc in IUM's Oligo Cleansing Gelée.
A powerful antioxidant, Zinc strengthens the skin's natural defenses to neutralize free radicals and protect cells from oxidative stress and aging.
Zinc also promotes healing, and is therefore involved in many skin problems: psoriasis, skin infections, leg ulcers... Its role in acne is now recognized: it acts against the bacteria responsible and limits the inflammatory reaction.
